At Kibugubya Primary School in Hoima, Teach For Uganda fellow, Tugume Victor, is demonstrating how dedication, empathy, and effective teaching can enhance both academic performance and learner confidence.
Victor joined the fellowship after reading and connecting deeply with Teach For Uganda’s vision of ensuring educational equity for all children. Having studied in a rural primary school from grades three to seven, he personally understands the barriers that learners in underserved communities face. This background inspired him to dedicate his efforts toward transforming education for children who share experiences similar to his own.
“I joined Teach For Uganda because I saw myself in these children. I wanted to be the teacher I never had.” — Tugume Victor
Since joining the program, Victor has witnessed a remarkable transformation among his learners. When he first arrived at Kibugubya Primary School, many of his students were shy and hesitant to express themselves, particularly in English. Through consistent encouragement, interactive lessons, and a nurturing classroom environment, he has helped them build confidence and communication skills. Today, his learners speak and express themselves freely in English, a development that fills him with immense pride and satisfaction.

One of Victor’s most effective teaching strategies is the grouping methodology, which allows learners to work collaboratively in small groups. This approach helps him offer targeted support based on each group’s needs, creating opportunities for personalized learning. As a result, classroom participation has increased significantly and learners now take ownership of their work, actively contributing to class assignments and discussions.
Victor’s passion for learning extends beyond traditional lessons. He has empowered the school’s quiz club, which has become one of the learners’ favorite activities. The club promotes teamwork, curiosity and a love for knowledge, giving students a fun platform to explore their potential. Under Victor’s leadership, the quiz club has helped many learners discover their strengths, boosting both their academic performance and confidence.

Through his experience with Teach For Uganda, Victor has grown not only as an educator but also as a leader. He is deeply grateful for the skills of leadership and flexibility he has developed through the fellowship. Before joining the program, he never imagined himself in the teaching profession, yet the experience has shaped his ability to lead with empathy, plan effectively and engage stakeholders in a meaningful way. These lessons have made him more organized, adaptable and resilient in guiding both learners and the broader school community.

Victor is also a passionate advocate for girls’ education and empowerment. Recognizing the challenges girls face in staying in school, he initiated the formation of a girls’ club, a safe space where learners could share their experiences and struggles. Through these conversations, Victor discovered that many girls were frequently absent or dropping out due to limited knowledge and support around menstrual hygiene management.
In response, he partnered with senior women teachers to provide targeted training on menstrual hygiene. These sessions led to the creation of a reusable sanitary pad-making project, equipping girls with practical solutions and knowledge to manage their health with dignity.
Thanks to Victor’s dedication, girls at Kibugubya Primary School now feel supported, confident, and empowered to continue their education without shame or interruption.

Looking ahead, Victor dreams of achieving a significant milestone, ensuring that 75% of his learners are able to read and comprehend effectively. This goal embodies his passion for creating lasting academic impact and his belief that every child, regardless of background, deserves the chance to succeed. His time in the fellowship has also exposed him to the broader realities of educational inequity in Uganda, inspiring him to continue supporting children in underserved communities even beyond the program.
Victor’s long-term aspiration is to contribute to Uganda’s education system through social entrepreneurship, building initiatives that promote learning, leadership and opportunity for children in rural areas. His journey is a shining example of what it means to serve with purpose and to transform lives through education.
Through his compassion, creativity, and leadership, Tugume Victor continues to represent the vision of Teach For Uganda, One day, all children in Uganda will attain an equitable quality education.
