Asad’s Journey of Change in Bugiri

At Nsavu Primary School in Bugiri District, a remarkable story of change is unfolding through Muyanja Asad, a psychology graduate who joined the Teach For Uganda Fellowship, driven by his passion to address the educational challenges facing Uganda’s children.

With a foundation in psychology, Asad had a keen understanding of how young minds grow and adapt. Yet it was the daily struggles faced by students across Uganda that stirred something deeper in him, a calling to create lasting change. Driven by this purpose, he joined the Teach For Uganda Fellowship, where his passion found its place at the heart of the classroom.

When Asad began teaching in Primary One, he noticed that many students lacked basic learning materials. Instead of turning away, he leaned in. Through regular home visits, he built genuine relationships with families and slowly, change began. Parents started contributing what they could, helping fill the gaps in their children’s education. Persistent absenteeism was another hurdle but with every continuous conversation and engagements, Asad helped rebuild trust. Today, more learners show up ready to learn, because someone believed in their presence.

Mondays and Fridays now mark something special at school: the Reading Club, a space Asad created where stories come alive and futures take shape. Here, learners grow their reading skills while learning to save money together. One day, that shared fund will help them buy their own scholastic materials. This is a lesson in empowerment to the learners at Nsavu Primary School.

Recognizing the need for improved cooking facilities at Nsavu Primary school, Asad has taken on an initiative without hesitation. Rather than waiting for external support, he has mobilized the community to launch a brick-making project an effort that has set the foundation for a modern kitchen and cooking stove. With a clear goal to complete the project before the end of his Teach For Uganda Fellowship, his leadership reflects a hands-on, grassroots approach fueled by vision

and collective effort.

Empowered by his experience and the skills gained from Teach For Uganda’s training and support, Asad has gone on to establish a Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Mayuge District. His mission is clear: to continue advocating for education and child wellbeing well beyond the confines of the classroom. Asad expresses deep gratitude to the Teach For Uganda Fellowship for providing him with the platform to drive change in Uganda’s low-income communities.

"Asad’s approach to leadership is both practical and profound. He doesn’t shy away from Uganda’s toughest educational challenges. We are proud to stand beside him as a changemaker." — Ivan Timothy, Teach For Uganda.
