Teach For Uganda is a leadership development organisation that believes strong leadership goes beyond managing people. it encompasses inspiring change, nurturing growth, and keeping purpose at the heart of everything we do.
In this spirit, we held a special Managerial Training Program aimed at strengthening the leadership and management capacities of our managerial team. Guided by the Teach For All team Oggawa Irene, Bianchetti Fernando, and Muhaso Vonesai, the training unfolded as a transformative journey of self-discovery, deep reflection and renewed commitment to our mission. Leaders were invited to engage in deep reflection on their personal leadership journeys, beginning with self-awareness. They explored their strengths and limitations, the values that guide them, and the ripple effect their decisions and words have on others.
Flavia Nakajjugo, Head of Programs, shared, “I realized that being aware of how I influence my team is the first step to leading with empathy.”
This honest exploration helped leaders recognise that true leadership begins within and by understanding themselves before they can effectively guide others.
The training also emphasized the power of reflective practices, challenging leaders to view reflection not as a luxury but as an essential driver of results. Tools like after-action reviews, learning journals and peer coaching were introduced, giving managers practical ways to pause, evaluate and learn from both successes and challenges.
Another powerful moment came during discussions on managing with purpose. Managers were encouraged to rethink everyday management tasks from performance conversations to team celebrations through the lens of purpose. This shift reminded everyone that leadership is about more than efficiency. The first day concluded with sessions on agile decision-making, where managers reflected on how to become more inclusive, flexible and responsive in their leadership. Many left with commitments to let go of rigid habits and embrace decision-making that empowers teams.

The second day shifted focus from self to team. Through interactive sessions, leaders practiced diagnosing the development levels of their team members and learned to adapt their leadership styles accordingly. This realization that no one leadership approach fits all was eye-opening. Leaders saw that sometimes their teams needed direction, and other times they needed trust and space to thrive. Delegation, often seen as a simple task assignment, was redefined as an act of empowerment. By delegating effectively, leaders could not only ease their own workload but also build ownership and confidence within their teams.
Well-being was another critical theme. Leaders reflected on the connection between well-being and performance, recognizing that sustainable impact requires healthy, motivated teams. They discussed practical ways of fostering a culture of care and balance in the workplace, with the HR Manager, Diana Rose Nyasenya, noting that, “When we invest in the well-being of our people, we invest in the success of our mission.”

What made this training particularly impactful was its practical and deeply personal nature. Leaders were making commitments to apply these lessons in their daily leadership practice. By the end of the program, each participant carried with them a renewed sense of purpose, a clearer leadership identity and concrete strategies to inspire, support, and lead their teams more effectively.
This journey, facilitated with passion by Oggawa Irene, Bianchetti Fernando, and Muhaso Vonesai, was a collective commitment to growth and a step forward in building a strong leadership pipeline for Teach For Uganda.
