Threads of Hope: How Crocheting is Weaving Possibilities in Uganda’s Underserved Communities

At just 11 years old, Mukisa Jerome , a Primary Six student at St. Peter’s Mataale Primary School, is quietly reshaping what resilience looks like in his community. In a place where even basic school supplies aren’t always a given, Mukisa has found an unexpected source of empowerment: a crochet hook.

Through the Skilled Program, launched by a Teach For Uganda Fellow Twamulala Beryl Caroline, Mukisa learned to crochet alongside other learners at his school. What began as a simple classroom activity has grown into a practical skill and one that helps him buy essential items like books, pens, and pencils, especially during times when his guardians can’t afford them.

"When I crochet, I feel like I am helping myself and my family. I can buy my own books and not miss school," Mukisa says with pride.

Fellows like Beryl, through Teach For Uganda’s two-year Fellowship, are doing far more than delivering lessons from textbooks. Inside these classrooms, they’re nurturing spaces where academic learning meets hands-on experience. It’s an education that cultivates more than just knowledge but resilience, creativity, and a sense of self-worth. It’s a powerful example of what can happen when education moves beyond learning but can as well tap into creativity, self-reliance, and purpose.

Across Uganda, countless learners are rediscovering their potential through this Fellowship model. Some find their spark in numeracy, others in literacy but the common denominator is opportunity.

Mukisa is just one of many students across Uganda whose future is being transformed through this Fellowship model. His smile is a gentle reminder that brilliance often lies in the most unexpected places. It simply needs a chance to shine.
