GIVE A BOOK: A Child Cannot Learn to Read Without Something to Read

Why Give a Book?

A child cannot learn to read without something to read.

Across many underserved public primary schools in Uganda, this simple truth is still a daily reality. Children walk into classrooms ready to learn, teachers show up ready to teach, but the most basic learning tool is often missing: books.

For too many learners, reading is not limited by ability. It is limited by access.

As Teach For Uganda marks 10 years of impact, we are launching the Give a Book Campaign to respond to one of the most urgent and visible gaps in our classrooms. We have seen what happens when children are placed in learning environments that believe in them. We have seen confidence grow, curiosity awaken, and leadership take root. But we have also seen how difficult it is for a child to build literacy when books are scarce, shared among too many learners, or completely unavailable.

This is not just a reading problem. It is a future problem.

When a child cannot read confidently, every other subject becomes harder. Science becomes harder. Mathematics becomes harder. Social studies becomes harder. Expression becomes harder. Dreams begin to shrink before they have even had room to grow.

The Give a Book Campaign is our invitation to change that.

Through this campaign, Teach For Uganda aims to raise USD 53,000, to provide book access for 5,000 learners in underserved public primary schools. These books will not sit on shelves as symbols. They will be placed where they matter most: in classrooms, in reading spaces, and in the hands of children who are eager to learn.

Your gift can help make this possible.

  • USD 10 supports one learner.
  • USD 500 supports one classroom.
  • USD 1,000 supports one school.
  • USD 5,000 and above can support multiple schools and help build a stronger culture of reading.

This campaign is more than a fundraising effort. It is a call to action for individuals, companies, alumni, Board members, partners, and global supporters who believe that every child deserves a fair chance to learn.

For 10 years, Teach For Uganda has worked alongside schools and communities to build leadership for education equity. Our Fellows and Alumni have served in underserved classrooms, supported thousands of learners, engaged families, and led community-based solutions that prove what is possible when committed leaders choose to act.

Now, we are asking you to act with us.

Because a classroom without books is not truly a classroom.

Because reading is where learning begins.

Because every child deserves to hold a book, turn a page, meet a new idea, and imagine a bigger future.

Give a book today. Help us place learning directly in a child’s hands.
